How to Reduce Segment Wear on Granite Saw Blades

Granite saw blades often work for long periods, so the segments experience significant wear and need to be replaced frequently. So, how can we reduce the wear of the segments?

The quality of the granite saw blade itself, including diamond grade, content, grit size, the compatibility of the bond and diamond, and the shape of the workpiece, are crucial factors affecting tool wear.

The wear level of a granite saw blade is also affected by the material being cut, the feed rate and cutting speed selected, and the geometric shape of the workpiece.

Different workpiece materials vary significantly in fracture toughness, hardness, and other properties, so the characteristics of the material also influence the wear of granite saw blades.

The higher the quartz content, the more severe the diamond wear; if the content of orthoclase is noticeably high, the cutting process becomes more difficult; under the same cutting conditions, coarse-grained granite is more difficult to cleave compared to fine-grained granite.

Segment chipping during cutting:

Granite saw blade segments may chip during cutting if the sintered body structure is loose or if material segregation occurs.

Cutting jump / chatter caused by diamond dropout:

Segment jumping occurs when diamonds fall off improperly. This issue is caused by uneven diamond distribution in the matrix—some areas have excessive concentration while others have too little.

Poor cutting sharpness:

During the heating and sintering process of granite saw blade segments, differences in temperature gradient between the tooth tip and tooth root, powder activity, and uneven distribution of low-melting materials can result in changes in the sintered structure and mechanical properties, leading to reduced sharpness.
